Murrungar

About us

Build, Grow and Nurture – Kirrae Whurrong language of southwest Victoria.

Murrungar is a bold Indigenous profit-for-purpose enterprise, co-founded through a value-driven capability partnership with leading Australian building services company, A.G. Coombs.

Melbourne based with a national footprint, we’re transforming building services procurement into a genuine force for Indigenous economic empowerment, community capability and cultural expression.

As a vehicle for change and greater economic participation for Indigenous companies, Murrungar adds value and ensures purposeful social impact.

Grounded in the meaning of our name “to build, grow and nurture”. Murrungar reimagines what procurement can do.

We harness the power of everyday procurement to enable Indigenous-led design, create skilled employment opportunities and reinvest value into First Nations communities.

Acting with purpose and leading with respect, Murrungar serves as a cultural bridge between corporate, government and community.

Our Journey

The roots for Murrungar were sewn in 2016, when a relationship was forged between Aaron Clark – then Director of the Richmond Football Club’s Korin Gamadji Institute, and leader in the clubs Elevate reconciliation action plan (RAP) – and Russell Telford, Managing Director at A.G. Coombs Group, who shared values and vision via a strong connection with the club in supporting leadership programs and youth pathways.

Creating impact through advocacy and influence.Over the next decade, Aaron provided his expertise and guidance to help shape A.G. Coombs’ reconciliation pathway and implementation.

What began as collaboration on reconciliation initiatives evolved into the idea for Murrungar – a profit-for-purpose enterprise designed to transform procurement in the building services industry into an authentic force for Indigenous economic empowerment, community capability and cultural expression.

Murrungar was built on shared purpose, aligned values and a simple idea — to pay it forward. By spending money differently today, we create better outcomes for tomorrow.

Every transaction becomes a catalyst for change. Our clients aren’t just meeting targets — they’re driving measurable, real-world impact across Indigenous employment, education and community development.

At our core is a deep commitment to building careers, sparking lifelong learning, and using the power of sport to inspire, lead and transform lives.

Profit-for-purpose: Impact through shared value

Central to Murrungar’s approach is a ‘profit-for-purpose’ business model where a percentage of revenue is funnelled directly into community outcomes such as STEM scholarships, career pathways and sporting leadership initiatives.

This model ensures that commercial success directly translates into community benefit, creating a virtuous and sustainable cycle of empowerment and investment.

Within the first three years, Murrungar aims to divert a minimum of 20% of partner spending through First Nations suppliers, directly diversifying the construction industry’s supply chain.

Murrungar also plans to train or upskill 50 Indigenous staff into technical roles within the industry by 2030 – a target of 10 new professionals annually.

According to The Sleeping Giant Rises report by Supply Nation, for every dollar spent with an Indigenous business, there’s a direct community impact of $3.66.

That means that each dollar that passes through the Murrungar supply chain allows economic benefits to flow back to Indigenous communities – building a more prosperous and equitable future for all Australians.

Our targets extend beyond simple employment outcomes. Murrungar seeks to create careers rather than contracts, implementing targeted skills pathways, mentoring and leadership opportunities designed to uplift entire families – recognising the collective nature of Aboriginal culture and the ripple effects of economic empowerment throughout communities.

“Murrungar is living proof that reconciliation and profit are not opposites – they are partners.”
